Manetta - Photomosaic on Canvas - 51" x 68"
Manetta ties together past and present art history. The three figures viewed through the lens of Manet's Dejeuner sul l'herbe (1863) were created from a mosaic of images of artists who lived and worked near my home/studio in San Francisco's Western Addition during the early 1990's. 
Supported by grand cultural references in the background, the faces depicted in the smaller order of tiles merge together to symbolize the complexity of the human personality and an aggregate body politic.

#8_03_03 - is one of a continuing series inspired by the 1960's work of Lee Bontecou . This still was taken from an environment I am developing in 3D, reminiscent of Bontecou's wire and canvas armatures.

The 3D geometry is textured with scans derived from my recent physical work in process entitled 'Recent Context' (info available at http://spensley.com/print.pdf).

I am fascinated by the transit between the digital and the physical worlds and interested in making work that exists within this region. I am presently producing a video fly-thru of this environment as well as high resolution versions for a set of 18 x 24 limited edition prints.
